The story behind the Loteria! Mural Downtown

If you’re ever visiting downtown your almost sure to drive by a colorful mural that really grabs the attention, the Loteria! Corpus Christi.

In November, K Space Contemporary put on a large show known as the Loteria! Exhibition, where 114 artists submitted 130 paintings of Loteria cards that were then displayed in groups of 9, creating 13 giant tablas throughout the gallery.

The exhibition caught on and quickly progressed into a plan for a Corpus Christi version of the game as well as an outdoor mural. After the exhibition many of the arts where photographed and sent in to a panel of jurors where 54 pieces were selected to be included as 4×6 panels for the mural. 24 of the panels were installed in 2014 with the remaining 30 panels being placed in September 2015.

Shortly afterwards the mural was dedicated to The Marina Arts District in conjunction with Art Walk, with more than half of the contributing artists attending. To this day you can find the mural located on the south wall of the 619 Chaparral St., in downtown Corpus Christi, where it spans 56 ft x 24 ft.
